Our Community Heroes

“The family-run pub, The Robin Hood, Overseal has always served their community. But Ruth, Steve and TJ have gone above and beyond during Lockdown to do whatever is necessary to support the local community, and I could not be proud of what they have achieved.”
Andy Parker,
Director of Leased and Tenanted Operations

The Overseal community pub, Robin Hood, operates a foodbank all year and last Christmas, Ruth created Christmas Dinner hampers for families in need. But over the past year, the team has gone the extra mile to ensure that local children are kept busy during the Coronavirus lockdown.

Ruth, Steve and TJ, originally planned to distribute Easter goodie bags containing craft activities to local children alongside a showing of the film ‘Hop’, with the aim to use the crafts to decorate St Matthew’s Church. Unfortunately, lockdown measures forced the cancellation of the event, but the pub team decided to deliver the crafts to children in their homes as a way to give back to the community and raise morale.

With the help of the pub team and lovely regulars, they were able to distribute craft bags to over 200 children in the village, alongside Easter eggs donated by the Overseal Gala Committee. Volunteers were joined by characters, including the pub’s manager TJ, dressed as Mickey Mouse, Easter Bunny and Cinderella, who left goodie bags on doorsteps and waved to children as they walked past.

Over Christmas, the pub brought the decorations outside, installing three trees at the front of the pub to bring festive spirit to the community. And working with social services and the local EHO office, the pub successfully ran a Christmas grotto for the local children and created Christmas hampers including turkey for local families who may go without.

The pub is at the heart of the community, and working alongside the Overseal Gala Committee has undoubtedly made a difference to Overseal's children.
