The Royal George Tavern, a community pub in Shildon, has donated £300 worth of unused food to their local foodbank after being forced to close due to the Coronavirus crisis.

Pub partners, Polly and Shug Whyte, decided to donate the food after realising that many in the community would struggle to put food on the table, a situation that is only made worse by the current crisis. Foodbanks are also struggling to keep up with demand, meaning that initiatives like this are becoming increasingly necessary.

The pub, owned by Hawthorn, a community pub operator which owns more than 700 pubs across England, Scotland and Wales, donated items including soft drinks and snacks, with a sale value of around £300, to local foodbank Shildon Alive, who support the vulnerable in their community through an affordable community shop.

Polly said: “As a community, I know that some people are struggling to get to the shops during the pandemic. After being forced to close, we were left with stock that we were unable to sell, and we were happy to donate it to such a worthy cause.”
